So you don't really need to know the specifics taught in algebra II or precalculus (like how to solve for imaginary roots, how to solve polynomials of x degree, etc.) you just need to have the foundation taught in those classes for manipulating math equations.

There's a reason why people don't learn calculus without having gone through all the math levels before, because a lot of stuff (such as factoring) needs to become second nature.

5/6/2009 · Can you learn to be good at math or are you just "born with it"? I'm 16 and in grade 11. I've taken only the minimum amount of math required and only college level math at that. But computer science requires a lot of math, mainly calculus, advanced functions and physics.

When I teach people calculus, the big reasons they don't succeed tend to be problems with arithmetic and very basic algebra. For example, students won't know how to compute 2/(3/4), or they'll try to simplify $1/(x+y)$ to $1/x+1/y$. If you can handle this kind of stuff, then you're better prepared to learn calculus than most of my students.

To learn this stuff, you need to read lots of books. I will list some of my favorites below, and also some you can get free online. But, you can't learn math and physics just by reading books!
